BAND OF THE YEAR CONTEST 2019

Band of the year contest –

We can happily report that the long awaited Band of the Year Contest has happened and what a success it was indeed! The event, organised by Martin Gernon saw the 9 best bands in the UK compete for the ultimate trophy – to be the Band of the Year!!

This was the first year that the event was to take place, and was held on Saturday the 22nd June at Stoller Hall in Manchester. The proceedings started with Fodens who faced the much dreaded no. 1 draw, however they did not let this dampen their spirits and performed a fantastic programme.

Each band had roughly half an hour to perform a programme of their own choosing and the day successfully ran accordingly to plan with, Flowers, Fairey’s, Brighouse and Rastrick, Black Dyke, Hammonds, Cory and the Tredegar band all taking to the stage for a shot at the title. All bands included a test piece, a soloist performance (of which all bands must be praised for the outstanding calibre) and an entertainment piece.

As the competition only featured the best bands in the country, this made sure that judges Tom Brevik, Reid Gilje and Jan de Haan’s lives incredibly difficult upon deciding the winning band of the day as the standard of all bands was extremely high. However, a decision was finally made and the Cory band were crowned victorious!! Their programme was inspired by the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing included Powell’s ‘The Spaceman’, Phillip Harpers own composition ‘Explorers on the moon’ and a fantastic Cornet Concerto by Principal cornet player Tom Hutchinson who rightly took the crown of the competitions best soloist!

In a very close second place came the Black Dyke Band, and having attended the event myself, a personal highlight of the day was their baritone player Katrina Marzella’s performance of a Baritone Concerto by Phillip Harper. A real baritone masterclass!! And finally the Tredegar band came in a very respectable third place with a ballad inspired flugel horn solo beautifully played by Danny Winder.

The feedback for the event has been outstanding and I along with many others will be looking forward to the event in 2020!
